Reserve Grampians Shiraz 2016 Comparing Australian wine to French benchmarks is, in a way, a vainglorious waste of time. Perversely, though, it is fascinating and I am writing this note, so you will simply have to accept that Côte-Rôtie is a paragon of syrah to which this noble wine rightly aspires. It is tightly wound across a beam of perfectly tuned oak, smoked meats, an arc of mineral, and pulpy, palate-whetting tannins. Gorgeous scents of violet, vanilla, blueberry and iodine, too. Long, and defined by an extraction regime and taste of the highest order. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 97 To 2026 $50 NG

Grampians Shiraz 2016 This kicks off an exceptional shiraz duo, or is that syrah? Stylistically, perhaps more attuned to the latter. A smear of tapenade across blue to black fruits, dried seaweed, camphor and floral-lilac aromas, sewn by a thread of bright, peppery, clove acidity in parry to the fruit’s thrust. This is incredibly refreshing without the reductive bane of contemporary Aussie cool-climate shiraz ... or is that syrah? Will hold, but why wait? Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 94 To 2024 $35 NG

Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2016 Rating 93 To 2024 $45 NG

Macedon Ranges Pinot Noir 2016 Rating 93 To 2024 $40 NG

Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay 2016 Rating 92 To 2025 $40 NG

Mornington Peninsula Sparkling Chardonnay 2011 Rating 91 $50 NG
